SPL Champion Series Subwoofers - More Information
SPL Champion Edition Subwoofers: Competition-proven technology that’ll blow you away
What do you get when you combine seventy-plus years of speaker manufacturing know-how with the destructive nature of SPL competition? The Pioneer SPL-Champion Edition Subwoofer. Battle-tested in brutal SPL competitions, the SPL-Champion Edition subwoofers are Pioneer’s most powerful subwoofers ever.
Pioneer engineers developed the TS-W8102SPL and TS-W5102SPL from the ground up with a no-holds-barred approach. The project focused the talents of one of the world's largest car speaker manufacturer and resulted in a history-making product that helped exceed 180dB in competition. These SPL subwoofers are capable of providing both record breaking volume levels, and the musical response and accuracy for which Pioneer is known for.
Even though you may never need to unlock the full power an SPL subwoofer know that many of the competition-proven technologies developed for the Champion Edition subwoofers are also available in the rest of the Pioneer subwoofer lineup.

The Technology Behind the Champions
Keeping Everything In Line
SPL competition level subwoofers incorporate an innovative woven Aramid Fiber reinforced radial rubber surround for improved power handling, reduced distortion, improved durability, and louder, more controlled bass. This surround is constructed of three layers; two of rubber and one of interwoven Aramid Fiber. The Aramid Fiber layer is designed with a honeycomb weave, which distributes strength evenly throughout the surround material eliminating any weak points and improving its high power capability. The result is an extremely durable and resilient surround that resists puckering, even under intense power conditions
Wide-Roll, Overhung Surround*
In order to provide greater Sound Pressure Level output, Pioneer engineers challenged themselves to increase the cone surface area while maintaining a traditional 12” form. The result is an overhung surround design – a Pioneer first. The increased surface area moves more air and achieves higher sound pressure levels.
Standing up to Extreme Pressures
The dust cap of a subwoofer does more than just look pretty - it provides vital rigidity to the cone of the subwoofer. Using a sandwich structure of Carbon fibers, Formed Acrylic Polymer, and Glass fibers, the strength of the dust cap of these subwoofers has been dramatically improved without increasing the weight. Compared to previous generations of Championship Edition Subwoofers, the strength of the dust cap has increased 3650%!
High in Fiber, High in Strength
An extremely rigid yet lightweight cone is vital to prevent cone failure and distortion at high sound pressure levels. Pioneer’s IMPP™ subwoofer cones meet this need perfectly. They incorporate a proprietary composite blend of long carbon fibers that are interlaced to form an exceptionally resilient fiber weave. This provides the strength and rigidity for low distortion, while ensuring clean and superbly powerful bass.
Keeping Cool in The Heat
To equip the Competition Class SPL Dual Voice Coil Subwoofers for +180dB SPL competitions, Pioneer developed a ceramic-coated voice coil winding that doubles the power handling capability of a conventional voice coil. Utilizing nanotechnology, the ceramic coil design insulates the voice coil wire, preventing short circuits due to overheating. These innovations dramatically improve reliability, offering a 50% increase in heat resistance over previous generations, while helping to avoid voice coil ‘burn-out’ during extreme SPL use.
A Little Bit Of Breathing Room
Pioneer’s Competition Class SPL Dual Voice Coil subwoofers feature a supporting voice coil wire. As a result, it allows the SPL competition level subwoofers to withstand even more extreme conditions, helping to eliminate the risk of the Voice Coil wire coming loose or breaking.
Not So Heavy Metal
The SPL competition level subwoofers feature a new Titanium voice coil former, which is far stronger than the conventional voice coil formers made from Aluminum or Glass-Imide. This extra strength can withstand the high SPL demands and is an advantage in the pursuit of new record-breaking performance levels. In addition, since Titanium has very low electrical conductivity, there is no efficiency loss.
