Remember VHS? Such a relic. Such a fossil. All those bulky, flimsy tapes could handle was analog video. Searching for content VHS-style involved fast-forwarding or rewinding, and a lot of patience.

Standard DVDs are a big step up, enabling digital video and searchable content. But as good as they are, DVDs were designed for standard definition video, and their interactivity is pretty limited.

No format available today can match the capacity and capabilities of Blu-ray Disc^®. Until Blu-ray, there just wasn't room for digital high-definition video—all that visual detail and advanced interactivity take up a lot of space.

Blu-ray Discs fit it all into one amazingly durable package. That's because they have a harder outer surface than DVDs and CDs, which allows them to better resist the scratches that can cause playback problems on these legacy formats.
