Pioneer Makes A Sound Statement With Premier Reference Series Component Speakers

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. today debuted the Premier Reference Series TS-C720PRS 6.75-inch and TS-C520PRS 5.25-inch speakers, a line of high-end component speakers for those who demand the absolute best sound quality.  The highly anticipated speakers are designed to accurately reproduce music in great detail ranging from rock to classical with maximum efficiency and minimal distortion.

“The quality of our PRS component speakers is a direct result of Pioneer’s long history in the speaker business.  Our company began as a speaker manufacturer in 1938 and today we are the world’s largest speaker manufacturer,” said Larry Rougas, vice president of marketing and product planning for the mobile entertainment division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.  “We’ve applied years of experience and technology into these drivers so they deliver the most accurate sound possible.”

The woofers utilize two major breakthroughs in speaker design: multi-layer cone and micro-fiber surround.

  • A second-generation multi-layer cone made of composite foamed Injected Molded Polypropylene (IMPP), which uses interlaced aramid fiber “sandwiched” between aramid fiber (woven carbon-blended fiber) and glass fiber layers ensures cone rigidity without increasing the overall weight.  The technique dramatically reduces flexing, minimizing any distortion and unwanted harmonics.
  • The use of micro fiber surround, which has a higher internal loss characteristic than other materials, further increases cone control and results in a more linear, realistic sound quality.  Saxophone and piano sounds are more pronounced with better detail.

In the center of the mid bass driver is an aluminum center plug that acts as a “phase” plug and voice coil cooling system.  The aluminum center draws heat away from the voice coil where it is cooled by the airflow created by the moving cone.   Decreasing the voice coil temperature allows the mechanical characteristics to remain consistent, providing accurate mid bass and improved frequency response at any volume. The cone shape of the plug increases pressure in the throat area of the driver and directs the movement of air forward, resulting in increased efficiency and better imaging.

A large 1.125-inch soft dome tweeter made of polyester fiber is encased in a specially designed anti-resonant sealed chamber.  The tweeter chamber is notched behind the diaphragm to lower frequency response resulting in enhanced mid to high frequency transition in the vocal range.  Further improvements include a canceling magnet and a shorting ring to eliminate stray magnetic energy for better control of the diaphragm.

Included in the set of component speakers is an outboard crossover that can be displayed.  The crossover is encased in a clear plastic and uses gold plated terminals.

The TS-C720PRS and TS-C520PRS components speakers will be available in April 2006 for suggested prices of $550 and $500.

Pioneer’s Mobile Entertainment Division is the leading manufacturer of audio, video and information products for in-car use.
