Pioneer Space-Saver Subwoofer Only 4-Inches Deep

Pioneer’s TS-SW124D 12-Inch Subwoofer Made to Fit in Tight Places, Perfect for Trucks and SUVs

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., the leader in automotive speaker technology, today unveiled a uniquely designed 12-inch subwoofer intended for shallow applications commonly found in trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUVs). The truck and SUV segment is the fastest growing category of vehicles in the United States and according to the 2003 Ward's Automotive Yearbook, more than 43 percent of vehicles sold in 2002 were trucks or SUVs. The Premier TS-SW124D shallow subwoofer uses an innovative design that makes it only four inches tall compared with eight inches or more for a traditional subwoofer – giving consumers an easy option to add bass to space-limited trucks and SUVs.

“Trucks and SUVs frequently lack the third dimension in music – bass – because space constraints make it difficult to install a component subwoofer. The TS-SW124D was the vision of a Pioneer employee who also happens to drive a truck. He wanted better bass in his own vehicle and worked with the engineering team to design a shallow subwoofer that would give him the full, rich sound quality he desired,” said Michael Townsen, vice president of marketing for mobile entertainment at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “The TS-SW124D solves the problems associated with installing a sub in a truck or SUV and also will work in other vehicles that have space constraints.”

The Pioneer Premier TS-SW124D subwoofer incorporates a spider-less design utilizing dual carbon aramid fiber cones and a symmetric dual surround. The subwoofer performs and handles like a traditional subwoofer without sacrificing valuable space. It requires less space and a smaller enclosure (approximately .6-.8 cubic feet), fitting in tight areas such as behind seats.

The Pioneer Premier TS-SW124D will be available in May 2004 with a suggested retail price of $220.

Features of the Premier TS-SW124D include:

  • Spider-less Design – A traditional subwoofer uses a spider that is connected to the voice coil of the speaker, which keeps the coil aligned/centered while it moves in the magnetic gap. The TS-SW124D has eliminated the spider altogether and uses a dual surround and closed air suspension in its place.
  • Symmetrical Dual Surround and Closed Air Suspension (patent pending) - Pioneer engineers developed a Symmetrical Dual Surround to replace a conventional spider. The bottom surround is inverted and connected to a second cone; they move together uniformly, keeping the voice-coil in place. The dual cone construction creates a “closed air suspension” increasing the cone mass for increased bass response. The design significantly reduces depth of the speaker.
  • Carbon / aramid fiber Cone – Strong carbon and aramid fibers combined with IMPP form a rigid but very light cone, which is great for bass reproduction. Dual cone reinforcement nodes connect the front and rear drive cones, greatly increasing structural rigidity
  • Die-Cast Basket – A one-piece basket assembly holds the motor assembly, cone and magnet structure, reducing internal stress and providing superior damping and increased magnetic efficiency.
